Staying longer

A long stay needs a real work permit

Indonesia is tightening the line between tourist and work visas. Any income-generating activity or brand collaboration in Bali — even remote — needs the appropriate permit, and informal arrangements are being phased out.

The Limited Stay Permit (KITAS) is today’s main route to a legal, extendable long stay for work.

Questions

Long stay FAQ

Straight answers on staying and working in Bali for the long term.

Read the full FAQ
Is a work visa worth it for staying more than a year?

Yes. It gives you legal status, permission to earn income and access to extensions — and avoids the severe penalties of working on the wrong visa.

Can remote workers get the digital nomad visa for 2027?

Official requirements are still pending. For now, remote workers usually use a working KITAS sponsored by an Indonesian entity. We will update guidance once rules are announced.

Does a KITAS extension really take 3 to 7 days?

That is the ideal case for complete, early renewals. Queries or peak periods can stretch it, so allow several weeks for the whole renewal.

What if I work on a tourist visa?

Paid work or commercial activity on a tourist visa can lead to fines and deportation. Influencers and content creators are under particular scrutiny.
